Day One:

Overnight Sheraton Hotel – Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner  

 

Met of their international flight, guests will be transported across to their hotel by our professional Guide. Here, after settling in, a thorough briefing of Ethiopia and the upcoming safari will be given.

 

The modern Addis Ababa is home to the African Union and a major base of the United Nations, making this capital the “Geneva” of Africa. There are numerous sights and attractions around this melting pot of a city and the afternoon explorer could take in sights such as the “Mercato”, the largest open-air market in Africa or visit the museums (National or Ethnological).

Day Two:

Overnight: Korkor Lodge – Breakfast/Packed Lunches/Dinner

Flight to Mekelle. (Approx 1 hr 10 mins). Explore Tigray and Gheralta Mountains

 

It takes a couple of hours driving North from Mekelle to reach the sandstone mountains of Gheralta. Once there and settled in to Korkor Lodge, we will spend the afternoon exploring these mountains and visiting one of the many rock hewn churches that are scattered in this incredibly scenic countryside.

Day Three:

Overnight: Korkor Lodge– Breakfast/Packed Lunches/Dinner

Explore Tigray and Gheralta Mountains

 

Visit a couple of the rock hewn churches that are widespread in these mountains. Each usually takes a good uphill hike to get there but the views and churches themselves are well worth the effort.

Dating from the 4th and 5th centuries, these ancient carved churches are still live today. Although smaller than Lalibela, they are more impressive in that the work taken to access the cliff tops and dig away the sandstone to create them is simply amazing.

Day Four:

Overnight: Korkor Lodge – Breakfast/Packed Lunches/Dinner

Explore Tigray and Gheralta Mountains

 

The Northern Tigray countryside is amazingly scenic. Full of history and intrigue there are many beautiful trails to walk through these remote mountains. Visit villages and learn of how the Tigrinians live their agro-pastoralist life styles. In the event that one of these days falls on a market day, we will visit those markets.

Day Five:

Overnight: Sabean Hotel– Breakfast/Packed Lunches/Dinner

Drive to Axum (3 to 4 hours) Explore relics of the ancient kingdom

 

We will take a morning drive across to the historic town of Axum. Here we will visit the Stellae field and learn of the Axumite empire. Once one of the 4 most important world empires, little remains today, but the history of this period is etched in stone stellae. Home of the legendary Queen of Sheba, we will also visit the ruins of her ancient palace.

Day Six:

Overnight: Limalimo Lodge– Breakfast/Packed Lunches/Dinner

Drive to Simiens (5 to 6 hours)

 

Leaving Axum we take a scenic drive into the Mountainous Simien Massif with regular photographic opportunities. Approaching this vast escarpment is the best way to appreciate the sheer size and magnitude of this wilderness paradise. Drive up the Limalimo Highway to reach the top of the Simien Escarpment. Road building and engineering at it’s best to create this incredibly dramatic drive.

Day Seven:

Overnight: Limalimo Lodge– Breakfast/Packed Lunches/Dinner

Explore Simien Mountains National Park.

 

This day is spent exploring within the National Park.

Great walking, great wildlife viewing and some of the most impressive scenery in Africa. Great opportunities to sit with Geladas emerging from the cliffs in the early mornings and also to walk in the high country looking for Ibex.

Full day in the Park, including a picnic lunch at Chenek.

Day Eight:

Overnight: Maribela Hotel– Breakfast/Packed Lunches/Dinner

Drive to Gondar (2 hours) to catch commercial flight across to Lalibela.

 

We drive back from the Simien Mountains to the town of Gondar and fly across to Lalibela. Ethiopia’s most important and fascinating historical attraction.

Arriving in the afternoon with time to wander this medieval town and explore the world famous rock hewn churches here. There are three clusters of rock hewn churches and the afternoon will be spent visiting the first of these.

Day Nine:

Overnight: Maribela Hotel– Breakfast/Packed Lunches/Dinner 

Exploring Lalibela and surrounds.

 

A visit to the Yemrehanna Kristos monastery, an old church built within a large cavern.

The visit to Lalibela is undoubtedly one of the outstanding highlights of a trip to Ethiopia. Have lunch at the well-known Ben Abebe restaurant with magnificent views across the valleys.

The afternoon is spent visiting the second and third clusters of churches in the town. Leaving the most renowned St Giorgis church until last.

Day Ten:

Flight back across to Addis Ababa. ( Approx 1 hour)
