The modern Addis Ababa is home to the African Union and a major base of the United Nations, making this capital the “Geneva” of Africa. There are numerous sights and attractions around this melting pot of a city and the afternoon explorer could take in sights such as the “Mercato”, the largest open-air market in Africa or visit the museums (National or Ethnological)

Day Six: GHERALTA

Overnight: Korkor Lodge– Breakfast/Packed Lunches/Dinner

A short morning flight to the historic town of Axum. Here we will visit the Stellae field and learn of the Axumite empire. Once one of the 4 most important world empires, little remains today, but the history of this period is etched in stone stellae. Have lunch before driving to Korkor Lodge. This will take approximately 3 hours and the last hour will be driving alongside the incredible sandstone massif with the golden light of the sunset splashing the red cliffs faces.

Day Seven: GHERALTA

Overnight: Korkor Lodge– Breakfast/Packed Lunches/Dinner

Visit a couple of the rock hewn churches that are widespread in these mountains. Each usually takes a good uphill hike to get there but the views and churches themselves are well worth the effort.

Dating from the 4th and 5th centuries, these ancient carved churches are still live today. Although smaller than Lalibela, they are more impressive in that the work taken to access the cliff tops and dig away the sandstone to create them is simply amazing.
