Mount Kilimanjaro (5895m) is the highest mountain in Africa and one of the largest extinct volcanoes. On a clear day it can be seen from more than 150km away. Its peak is permanently snow-covered though it lies only 3 degrees below the Equator. Kilimanjaro can be climbed by any physically fit person, via the Marangu route, with no climbing experience necessary. The best months are January to February and August to October, the rainy season occurs during the months of March to June and November and December.

There are a number of routes of varying difficulties; Machame route, also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb, in contrast to the easier Marangu route, which is known as the Coca Cola route. Marangu is the most popular with three hut complexes for overnight accommodation, while the others have only tented camping facilities.
