WELCOME TO Sudan

Sudan is a vast and beautiful country of deserts, mountains and grasslands.

The dominant feature of the country is the world’s greatest river – the Nile. Two major tributaries – the Blue Nile and the White Nile – converge at the capital, Khartoum, and from there it winds its way between the Libyan and Nubian deserts and on into Egypt.

Spending time in and near Khartoum is an excellent way to bring many of the country’s visitor attractions within easy reach. Here, it is possible to stand at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile rivers and pick out the difference in water colour (caused by differing sand and silt). Khartoum also houses within its National Museum the famous Faras Frescoes. Rescued from underneath the sand at the ancient city of Faras they are the finest surviving examples of Christian Nubian artwork.

At nearby Omdurman, Sudan’s largest souk is well worth a visit as is the tomb of the Mahdi. And no visit to the city is complete without witnessing the whirling dervishes, resplendent in their red and green robes, who gather each Friday at the Hamed al-Nil tomb to perform their traditional Sufi dancing ritual.

Travelling North, the Meroe Pyramids are a special highlight with over 100 pyramids of up to 30 metres high. Built in the Nubian style as tombs for their rulers, this archaeological treasure is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

To the East, near the border with Eritrea, lies the town of Kassala. This is a perfect base for exploring the monumental Taka mountains – a great favourite with honeymooners.

And further East still, on the Red Sea coast, lies Port Sudan – access point for the finest scuba diving experiences in the Red Sea. Think of quiet dive sites with colourful, unspoiled coral reefs and amazing underwater wreckages awaiting exploration.

In Sudan it is possible to escape the crowds and discover treasures, ancient and modern.
