WELCOME TO Mauritius
Surrounded by a ribbon of ash blonde, sandy beaches with a lush interior of hills and volcanoes, Mauritius has been described as a pear-shaped paradise. This tropical island nation may be small, but there isn’t much you can’t do here.
Top of the list for many visitors is relaxing in one of the many luxury Indian Ocean resorts. If a touch of sun-soaked opulence is what you seek, Mauritius can truly deliver. The hotels and restaurants are world-class, offering exceptional views of the turquoise waters, along with outstanding service and sublime cuisine.
And then there are the beaches. Typically palm-fringed and lined with powdered white sand, the clarity of the gentle waters that lap them has to be seen to be believed. The Grand Bay in the north is popular with tourists and locals alike but for those looking for something quieter it’s easy to find. A short journey down the east coast brings with it access to a plenitude of serene, postcard-perfect beaches that you may just have all to yourself.
Those looking to enjoy the island’s many outdoor activities will have a dizzying array of choices. Naturally, there is a range of aquatic options from snorkelling and scuba diving in coral reefs with exotic tropical marine life, to water skiing, kayaking and even submarine safaris. On land, the island can boast several world-class golf courses, hiking in the Black River Gorges national park, rock climbing on the south west coast or kitesurfing in the shadow of the extraordinary Le Morne Brabant monolith – a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008.
Whatever you choose to do, Mauritius’s rich mix of cultures, peerless scenery and superior hospitality will leave you longing to return again and again.
