WELCOME TO Madagascar

Madagascar is renowned for its unique flora and fauna. As one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots it draws in botanists and wildlife enthusiasts from all over the globe.

The world’s 4th largest island, Madagascar’s plants and animals have developed in isolation for millions of years. Little wonder then that the country is blessed with scores of unusual species that don’t exist anywhere else. Some of the better known ones include the fossa (a cat-like carnivore and the largest predator on the island), tenrecs (hedgehog-like in appearance) and tomato frogs (named for the red hue of their skin).

If there is one creature that Madagascar is known for though, it’s the lemur. But this being Madagascar, there isn’t just one type of lemur. In fact there is over 100 varieties from the tiny mouse lemur to the relatively giant indri lemur (famous for singing like a whale). Thanks to Hollywood the best known variety is the ring-tailed lemur which can be seen in many southern regions.

To help visitors take in the island’s amazing wildlife, there are over 50 national parks, reserves and protected areas. Tsingy de Bemaraha, with it’s incredible limestone rock formations, is perhaps the best known. Safari’s in Madagascar are an experience unmatched and unrivalled anywhere else. Just like the wildlife, the habitats show incredible variety. In only a few hundred kilometres one can move through rainforests, mountains, grasslands and deserts.

And when it’s time to relax, Madagascar boasts some of the finest beach destinations in the Indian Ocean. Expect white sands, incredible azure waters and cloudless skies in laid back resorts like Nosy Be and Anakao. Activities include snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking and fishing.

Whatever you choose to do in Madagascar though, expect a welcome from your Madagascan hosts that’s as warm and pleasant as the tropical breeze.
