WELCOME TO Kenya

In some ways, it can be said that Kenya is Africa – or at least, Africa in microcosm.

More than any other country Kenya evokes the essence of Africa. It’s physical features mirror those of it’s continent. In the north there is dry, sandy desert. On the eastern coast there are palm trees on the beaches. And inland there are tropical forests, great lakes, mountains and grasslands. The places names conjure classic images of Africa too – Mount Kenya, Lake Victoria, the Great Rift Valley.

To safari here is to step in to the land where it all began for even the word “safari”, meaning “to travel”, is of Swahili origin. And Kenyan safaris are legendary. Not only can visitors to this beguiling country expect to see Africa’s Big Five game animals, but so rich and diverse is Kenya’s wildlife that Africa’s Little Five can be seen too. Each of the Little Five incorporate the name of a Big Five animal in their own name. For the record they are : Elephant Shrew, Buffalo Weaver, Leopard Tortoise, Ant Lion and Rhino Beetle.

Kenya has over 40 national parks and reserves with the most famous being the fabled Maasai Mara National Reserve in the open grasslands along the border with Tanzania.

Here, each year in July and October visitors can view one of the greatest spectacles in nature – The Great Migration. Over one million wildebeest as well as hundreds of thousands of accompanying zebras and Thomson’s gazelle migrate north and then south again following the seasonal rains and fresh grasses. Lying in wait of course are a host of predators including lions, cheetah, leopards and hyenas. This is simply a must-see event for safari enthusiasts.

Expect excellent camps and lodges, friendly and expert guides, and sunsets framing a stunning landscape that you’ll remember forever.
