WELCOME TO Congo (DRC)

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is like no other nation in Africa.

It’s the biggest country south of the Sahara, has the world’s second largest rainforest (the Congo Rainforest), more thunderstorms than anywhere else on the planet, and the greatest biodiversity of any African country. It’s one of only three countries where you can see mountain gorillas, and the only one where bonobos are found in the wild.

The jewel in the DRC’s crown is undoubtedly Virunga National Park. This is Africa’s original national park and not only does it possess incredible biodiversity but it’s also a geological treasure trove with six dormant volcanoes and two of the most active volcanoes in the world – Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira.

Mount Nyiragongo is of special interest as it’s possible to trek up the slopes of this smouldering giant and, upon reaching the crater at the top, set eyes upon the world’s largest lava lake. There is simply nothing that can compare to this awesome sight – particularly after dark when the boiling, churning lava glows orange and red, illuminating the inner walls of the crater and providing a precious view of our planet’s molten interior.

Nyiragongo’s eruptions, although spectacular, can be predicted thus making the trek perfectly safe for physically fit travellers. And the hike itself is a memorable experience, moving through lush rainforests that eventually give way to sparsely vegetated lava rock before arriving at the occasionally snow-dusted crater rim. As well as some tremendous vistas on the way up the fortunate might just spot blue monkeys or even chimpanzees.

And Virunga has another treasure too. It is home to several hundred mountain gorillas and small visitor groups can spend time in the presence of these gentle giants. For many this can be a profound experience and certainly one not to be missed.
