Botswana's Flood Plain
|Voted one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa in 2013, the Okavango Delta is a gigantic flood plain in Botswana’s northwestern corner.
It can be difficult to believe that this colossal wetland, with its mixture of small islands, inlets and oxbow lakes can exist only 100km or so from the sands of the Kalahari. But in fact the Okavango sits within the Kalahari basin and is effectively a vast oasis. Each year the delta is engorged with water from the Okavango River that flows over the plain, trebling its size.
The seasonal variance of the waters attracts and nurtures a staggering array of plant and animal life. The bird life in the delta is is especially notable with both resident and migratory species including South African ostrich, Green pigeon, Hamerkop, Saddle-billed stork and the rare Slaty egret.
Naturally, in such a watery environment marine life thrives too. There are estimated to be over 70 species of fish here including tigerfish, pike and bream and the region offers excellent fishing.
And of course, there are large mammals, drawn by the seasonal floods they provide a daily spectacle few places on Earth can match. Gently floating through the papyrus-lined waterways on a mokoro (traditional small boat) one may witness elephants and hippos bathing, male lechwe locked in trials of strength or lions sleeping off a successful hunt.
At the Moremi Game Reserve on the eastern side of the Okavango, it is possible to catch sight of the rarest of the Big Five – the Rhino. Thanks to a conservation and reintroduction programme there are small numbers of both white and black rhino present.
With its superb lodges and camps, expertly guided safaris over land and water and breathtaking scenery, the Okavango is a delight among African safaris and truly deserves it’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
