Game Reserve

Home to the Big 5

At Moremi it is possible to sight each of Africa’s Big Five game – lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhino.

Created in 1963 by the local Batawana people, the reserve is the only officially protected area within the Okavango Delta. Moremi covers almost a third of the delta in its eastern section and its breathtaking habitat and wildlife make it without doubt the jewel in Okavango’s crown.

A diverse mix of forests, small islands, waterways, marshes and grassland, Moremi manages to combine a feeling of intimacy and remoteness with relative ease of access via well maintained overland trails or by mokoro – the traditional canoes of the region.

Although covering less than 2000 square miles, the reserve showcases one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. In addition to the Big Five, sightings of leopards, hyenas, giraffe and zebra are relatively common.

Two rare species merit special mention – rhinos (both black and white) and African wild dogs. The rhinos were reintroduced here in the early part of the century and their numbers are slowly rising. The rare African wild dog numbers between 150-200 in this area making Moremi one of the best places in Africa to see this beautiful creature in the wild.

The centrepiece of Moremi is Chief’s Island. Once the exclusive hunting ground of Chief Moremi and the biggest island in the delta, the density of wildlife and variety of habitats here is extraordinary. The island also has some of the finest camps in the reserve and offers unsurpassed opportunities to witness big predators hunting.

A visit to Moremi Game Reserve offers almost limitless possibilities with new and exciting discoveries waiting around every corner.
